A Reflection on “O Come, All Ye Faithful”
As we gather together this morning to begin our celebration of Christmas, we turn to one of the most beloved invitations in all of Christian song — “O Come, All Ye Faithful.”
This carol, known originally in Latin as “Adeste Fideles,”is credited to John Francis Wade, an Englishman who taught music in France. What began as a Latin hymn sung quietly among believers soon spread across Europe, and later the world, calling the faithful to come and adore Christ the Lord.
In the 1800s, the words were translated into English, giving us the familiar opening we know today,: “O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant.” It’s a simple yet powerful summons — an invitation to everyone who believes to come and worship the newborn King. This hymn reminds us that worship is the proper response to God’s sovereign grace. The One born in Bethlehem is the eternal Son of God, the Savior of sinners, and the only hope for humanity.
This hymn is more than a song — it’s a call to the heart. Each verse draws us closer to the manger, closer to the wonder of that holy night when God Himself took on flesh and came into our world. It reminds us that Christmas is, at its core, a call to worship — to come before Christ with joy, with faith, and with adoration.
When we sing “O Come, All Ye Faithful,” we’re joining not only the voices gathered here tonight, but countless believers across the world and across time — all coming together in one chorus of praise: “O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord.”
So as we sing this carol, may our hearts respond with faith and gratitude,— to come, to adore, and to rejoice in the One who came for us all.
Reading of Psalm 95:1-7 (while instrumentalists play)
Come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation
Let us come to him with thanksgiving. Let us sing psalms of praise to him.
For the Lord is a great God, a great King above all gods.
He holds in his hands the depths of the earth and the mightiest mountains.
The sea belongs to him, for he made it. His hands formed the dry land, too.
Come, let us worship and bow down. Let us kneel before the Lord our maker, for he is our God.
We are the people he watches over, the flock under his care.
