Reflections: “You are My Beloved Son”

Yesterday, we were looking into Luke’s gospel where God the Father was telling His Son Jesus just how much He appreciated Him personally. God the Father called Jesus His beloved Son in whom He cherishes. This is a clear reflection from Psalm 2:7 and Isaiah 42:1. This occurred while Jesus, His unique Son, was praying to the Father as He was being baptized in the Jordan River.

The Holy Spirit descended on Jesus as a dove symbolizing the reality of His presence and power in Jesus from the starting point of His earthly ministry. This would be a ministry of purity and meekness with power and authority. And, this Spirit descending was emblematic of the Old Testament theocratic anointing, a God approved seal of endorsement of Jesus as man in the role as Prophet, Priest and King.

Think for a moment how much the Father loves the Son. My beloved Son in Whom I am well pleased. This is not the only time Jesus would, and we too hear of that affirmation. Consider how Peter reflects on Jesus transfiguration, a mere glimpse into the future rule and reign of Jesus in majestic glory.

2 Peter 1:16 For we did not follow cleverly concocted fables when we made known to you the power and return of our Lord Jesus Christ; no, we were eyewitnesses of his grandeur. 1:17 For he received honor and glory from God the Father, when that voice was conveyed to him by the Majestic Glory: “This is my dear Son, in whom I am delighted.”

And consider too that we as His faithful children called by God to enjoy His presence, just how much He loves us.

John 1:12 “But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God…”

1John 3:1-2 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.

Consider beloved, we are children right now. There’s no waiting, period. Now, that’s worth reflecting on.
